One couldn’t dream of a more dramatic entrance into the world than that of Moyo, the elephant calf. Found marooned on Musango Island during torrential rains in 2014, she was a sight that evoked both despair and determination. Moyo, knee-high, and a meager 56 kgs, was quite literally still attached to her beginnings via her umbilical cord. If ever there were a poster child for tenacity and the will to live, Moyo was it.

Rescued by KAWFT and Aware Trust and introduced to #wildislife_ZEN, Moyo embarked on an odyssey that would captivate hearts worldwide. Her relationship with Roxy, which sparked from their first meeting, gave Moyo more than just a mother figure; it gave her a confidante and a champion. Aptly named “Moyo” — the Shona word for “heart” — this little elephant would come to epitomize resilience, love, and a peculiar sense of humor.

In her early years, Moyo was a regular comedic relief in the kitchen, engaging in playful bouts with Pickles the warthog. Whether it was gamboling with Josephine the dog or providing adorable antics for the Danckwerts family, Moyo developed a fanbase that extended far beyond her immediate circle.

Visitors flocked to the sanctuary, drawn in part by the promise of meeting Moyo. Her charisma and charm made her an unforgettable ambassador for Wild is Life and Zimbabwe.

She played a crucial role in raising awareness about the plight of her species and exemplified the Culture of Care that Zimbabweans are proud of.

But Moyo’s contributions were not confined to raising awareness alone. As a matriarch, she took the newcomers under her ‘trunk’, guiding them from mental and physical trauma to health and well-being. The success of many orphans can be traced back to the benevolent leadership of Moyo.

Today, Moyo stands tall and proud. She is a force of nature and the very heart of the Sanctuary. As the next chapter of her life unfolds, she prepares to journey to Panda Masuie, the ifaw-supported rewilding facility near Victoria Falls. She’ll soon have the choice to join a herd of wild elephants, living out her destiny as a wholly Elephant.

Indeed, Moyo’s story is bittersweet. She will be deeply missed, her absence echoing in the Sanctuary. But as she embarks on this new journey towards the wild, the hearts she has touched along the way will be filled with excitement and hope. After all, the dream for Moyo was always to be fully free, fully wild, and fully Elephant.

And so, as Moyo takes her next big step, we celebrate the extraordinary journey of a “Man Rescues Poor Abandoned Elephant And Enriches Her With A Loving Forever Home”. Because, like the star that she is, Moyo continues to illuminate the path towards a brighter, wilder future for all elephants.
